Stefan Gartenmann eyes Celtic and Rangers double whammy as Aberdeen could face 'wounded animal' at Parkhead

Stefan Gartenmann insists Aberdeen can end their 35-year wait and claim another dream Old Firm double in Glasgow.

The Dons beat Rangers 3-1 at Ibrox at the end of September and are looking to back that up with a win at Celtic Park today. Aberdeen haven’t beaten Rangers and Celtic on their own patches in the same season since 1988/89 – when Alex Smith and Jocky Scott’s side won 3-0 at Ibrox and 3-1 at Parkhead

Gartenmann scored in the Ibrox win this term and believes the Dons can build on their impressive 2-2 draw with PAOK in Greece on Thursday. He said: “If we want to go where we all think we can go, these are the games where we have to show how far we have come. I don’t have the numbers but it’s been a while since Aberdeen have won away at both Celtic and Rangers in one season.

“So we are going to give everything we have. Hopefully Celtic are a wounded animal on Sunday (after their 6-0 midweek defeat by Atletico Madrid) but I am sure they will do everything to bounce back.

“We can build on this and gain a lot of confidence from this game. I’m certain we can gain something from the match.”

Aberdeen come off the back of a draining Europa Conference League draw with PAOK. They also came close to grabbing a point away to Frankfurt in their group opener. And the Dane knows his side will need to dig deep and show the same discipline in Glasgow.

He said: “In some ways it will be a very similar game. We need to play the same way and not let the surroundings get to us. We are capable of that and we showed that at Ibrox, away to Eintracht and in Greece – so why not against Celtic?”
