Stark truth on how important Yerry Mina is to Everton's defence

Everton have seriously missed the influence of Yerry Mina in their defence for the majority of this season. That's an undeniable fact, and you don't need to look deeper into the stats to really come to that conclusion.

The centre-back is widely regarded by many, when he's fit and available, as the best quality in his position that Everton have. But, he's only managed to make 11 appearances in all competitions this term, only two of those coming under Frank Lampard - for a combined total of about 111 minutes for his new boss.

The Colombia international is still set for more time on the sidelines in what will continue a frustrating campaign so far. The Blues have needed him in their back line, but he's so often not been there.

That has raised some questions over the contract situation of Mina. His current deal with the club runs out at the end of the 2022/23 season, and debate among some sections of the fanbase is already underway over whether the club should be looking to potentially cash in over the summer.

That's no reflection on his playing ability, it's more down to his availability. But, when you do have a closer look at the numbers behind even his limited performances for the side this season, you can see why there are many fans who would be reluctant to allow such an important player to leave on what would be a cut-price deal.
