Cambuslang Rangers co-boss' delight as veteran striker bags 100th goal

Cambuslang Rangers co-boss Billy Campbell saluted John Gemmell after he hit a century of goals at their level in Saturday’s win.

The veteran striker scored the club’s second goal of a 3-1 win over Gartcairn to help them lift the West of Scotland League Conference B crown.

And Campbell said: “Funnily enough, I said to John at half-time to go and get his 100th goal as the next goal to take us on.

“We know how good John is, he led the line brilliantly.

“Everyone did their job, but there were three or four outstanding performances in Scott Anson, Alan Reid and Tony Stevenson who had just come back from Covid and wasn’t 100 per cent.

“John Gemmell was outstanding and all the guys round about them – not one player let us down.

“We managed to get two or three guys a kick of the ball as well, and that will be the plan now, so they can play their part.”

While the title is wrapped up, Campbell insists his squad’s work is far from done and the real celebrations will be saved until the end of the season.

He added: “We need to get our heads on it. We’re back in this week for training.

“We won’t have any daft celebrations; a few of the boys went out for a couple of beers, but not the full squad.

“We made it clear that we’re over the moon, we’re grateful, but we’re not done yet – we have a couple of league games and a massive cup game to go, so we need to get tuned in.

“We’ve got Greenock on Saturday, so we need to make sure we’re professional in the games that are coming up.

“From an arithmetical point of view, the job’s done, but we need to be respectful to everybody as we’re going through to the end of the season.”
