Starfield focuses on building winners at Chess Tourney

Starfield School, Agege, Lagos is set to raise chess prodigies for the nation. These indications emerged when the school hosted the maiden chess tournament for schools in Lagos.

At the event, the school’s Sports Coordinator, Feyijimi Matilda Oluyemi, stated that through the competition, it is trying to uncover chess masters and smart children that the school will nurture to stardom.

She added that sporting activities, which are beneficial in many ways, motivate children to build up both physically and mentally.

“There are some children who have difficulty in breathing and others that can not bend their waist, and when you engage them in sports and they start to engage in different types of aerobics and games, which would aid them and they would eventually overcome it,” Oluyemi said.

The school’s Director of Studies, Chris Eigbe, said it took the decision to host the event because it is considered the king of games, with significant benefits for students to grow academically.

“Some other benefits of chess include concentration, decision-making skills, deep thinking, problem-solving, deep reasoning and critical thinking abilities. Chess help improves self-confidence and self-worth, attention span and enlarged memory capacity,” he said.

At the end of the competition, it clinched the first position in the secondary schools’ category, while Tofek Senior College came second as Providence Height School finished third.
