St Cuthbert Wanderers undone by five minute spell of “inexperience and naïvety” against Upper Annandale

A five minute spell of “inexperience and naivety” cost St Cuthbert Wanderers in their final Utility Hut South of Scotland League match of the season.

First half goals from Reis Webster and Dani Carcu gave Upper Annandale a 2-0 win as Saints finished second bottom.

Chief Ian Clark said: “There was a five minute spell of inexperience and naivety where they switched off and conceded two goals. Other than that, they competed for 85 minutes.

“That’s one of the things with having a young squad – inexperience and naivety will creep in.”

Saturday was Saints’ first game since the end of March, and was quickly followed up by Tuesday’s Tweedie Cup semi-final against Lochar Thistle.

However, a 3-0 defeat means the Kirkcudbright side’s season is now over, with Liam Nish, Rory Copland and Brodie Turner getting the goals.

Clark said: “It’s not been ideal not to have games but I can’t fault the lads. The squad we’ve ended the season with have been fantastic. The majority have signed up for next year so they understand we’ve already got one eye on that.

“Motivation has been fairly easy. We’ve had to leave one or two out over the last couple of months so the numbers have been strong to finish the season. The challenge selecting my bench and leaving one or two out, those are the difficult conversations.”
