St Cuthbert Wanderers boss believes side heading in right direction

St Cuthbert Wanderers boss Ian Clark believes the difference between his side now and a few months ago is “night and day”.

And he reckons if things had gone differently his side could have been dishing out a 4-1 defeat rather than been on the end of one on Saturday.

As it was, it was Upper Annandale who progressed to the next round of the South of Scotland League Cup.
Clark said: “From where we were pre-season to now is night and day.

“The squad is better in terms of quality and depth. The numbers are fantastic, the players are the right ones and now it’s about getting them to gel.

“The longer they play together the better they’ll become and I think Saturday is a testament to that.

“If you were at the game and only caught 20 minutes of it you’d have thought we would win 4-1, that’s how strong we were.

“A few goals probably shouldn’t have but these things happen in football. The guys respond how they should respond but at 2-1 we were pushing for an equaliser and get caught on the break.

“There were plenty of positives and the way we play is what’s impressing me. There’s two or three chances that, on another day, hit the back of the net and it’s a completely different game.

“The scoreline probably didn’t reflect what we put into the game, it’s the story of our season so far.”

Harry McLinden, on loan from Queen of the South, put Uppers in front before Dan Harvey doubled the lead from the spot.

Saints got one back only for Robi Carcu to restore Uppers’ advantage with Callum Thompson completing the scoring with a great goal.

The Kirkcudbright side had boosted their squad ahead of the game by bringing in Creetown forward Joe McMillan as well as goalie Kenny Davis.

Clark said: “Joe scored nearly 30 goals
