Spurs: 'Weird' Conte dilemma forcing him to manage 'game-by-game'

Antonio Conte has found himself in a strange situation at Tottenham, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Spurs have had problems with stringing a consistent run of results together, which has dented their hopes of finishing inside the top four.

Conte’s side have lurched from the sublime to the ridiculous in the first few months of 2022.

Having ended 2021 in a rich vein of form, they started the new year well by beating Watford 1-0 at Vicarage Road. However, they then lose their next three top-flight fixtures against Chelsea, Southampton and Wolves.

To the surprise of many, they snapped their losing streak by edging past Manchester City 3-2, but they were quickly brought back down to earth when they lost 1-0 at Burnley four days later.

The north London club bounced back by seeing off Leeds, but they were then knocked out of the FA Cup by Middlesbrough, and their inconsistent run continued when they followed up a thumping win over Everton by losing at Manchester United on Saturday.

Jones has claimed that Conte would usually like to have a settled side that he can rely on to play at a consistent level, but he has been unable to find this at Tottenham.

Reflecting on the current issues facing the Italian coach, Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “I think he’s had to start managing on a game-by-game basis, which has been quite weird for Conte because he normally has a plan which remains in place, and the players defend first and they’re hard to beat and resolute, and then all the other bits come on top of it.”

As things stand, Tottenham are currently six points behind fourth-placed Arsenal, who also have a game in hand.
