Spurs: £27.5m star with 'pedigree' has 'big part to play' under Conte

Sergio Reguilon still has a “big part to play” for Tottenham this season, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Since testing positive for Covid-19 last month, the Spain international has fallen out of favour and hasn’t started a game since the beginning of February.

Reguilon has pretty much been first-choice at left-back or left wing-back from the moment he arrived for £27.5m from Real Madrid back in 2020.

Ben Davies provided little competition last season, but Reguilon’s spot as number one on the left is more under threat than ever before.

Uncertainty about his position firstly came about when he was dropped for the defeat to Wolves on 13 February, with Ryan Sessegnon handed just a second league start of the season.

Reguilon’s positive Covid test then saw him miss the victory at Manchester City six days later, and while he returned to the squad for the games at Burnley and Leeds, he was an unused substitute in both.

The 25-year-old was once again on the bench for the FA Cup defeat at Middlesbrough on Tuesday with Sessegnon starting a fifth game on the bounce. Reguilon did play the final 15 minutes of extra-time, although he wasn’t able to save Tottenham from suffering an embarrassing fifth round exit.

It’s unclear whether Reguilon was left out of the starting line-up for the last three games due to his lack of match sharpness because of Covid, or whether Sessegnon has moved above him in the pecking order and is now Antonio Conte’s preferred option.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “Let’s see when Reguilon is in top condition again, because his pedigree can’t be dismissed, and I think he’s still got a big part to play.”
