Sporting CP supporters 'boycotted' Ruben Amorim’s possible last game ahead of Man United move

A considerable number of Sporting CP fans boycotted Tuesday night's win over Nacional - despite it potentially being the last match for manager Ruben Amorim ahead of a possible move to Manchester United.

The 39-year-old former Braga and Benfica midfielder is expected to be named Manchester United's new manager after Erik ten Hag's sacking on Monday afternoon. The Dutchman was dismissed by INEOS following a run of just three wins from the first nine games of the Premier League season, leaving United 14th in the table.

United appeared to move a step closer to appointing him as the sixth permanent manager of the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era on Tuesday afternoon as Sporting CP revealed Old Trafford chiefs had confirmed their intention to trigger the £8.3m release clause in his contract.

But that didn't stop Sporting fans from continuing their boycott of the Portuguese League Cup, with sections of supporters from the eight clubs involved in this season's competition - including Benfica, Braga and FC Porto - adamant they wouldn't attend any games after the Liga Portugal president revealed his ambition to stage the semi-final and final fixtures overseas.

That was evident on Tuesday night against Nacional as large sections of the Jose Alvalade Stadium remained empty during the game.

Amorim, though, refused to be drawn on whether the 3-1 win would be his last in charge of the Portuguese giants: "We don't know if it's a farewell game or if there will be one; that's still not been decided," he said post-match.
