Southampton: £25m star ‘one to keep an eye on’ at St. Mary’s

Southampton’s pursuit of Benfica striker Goncalo Ramos is ‘definitely one to keep an eye on’, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The highly-rated 21-year-old has reportedly been attracting attention from several Premier League clubs throughout the summer, and St. Mary’s has now been touted as a potential destination for him.

A recent report from The Telegraph has claimed that Southampton are ‘ready to compete’ for Ramos’ signature as they look to bolster their depleted forward line.

Armando Broja has returned to parent club Chelsea following his successful loan spell while Shane Long has departed for Reading, with only Sekou Mara replacing them.

Wolverhampton Wanderers and Newcastle United are also believed to be keen on Ramos’ services, but the Saints are now said to be ‘pushing in the race’ for the youngster.

It’s claimed that Benfica will demand £25 million to sanction the Portugal Under-21 international’s sale, a figure that would make him Southampton’s record signing.

Ralph Hasenhuttl has already welcomed six new additions to the club this summer, yet Ramos’ arrival would arguably the most exciting of them all.

Jones has doubts over Southampton’s pursuit of Ramos, though, stating that they are ‘in a pretty dangerous predicament’ at this moment in time.

He told GiveMeSport: “I’m a little bit concerned about the pedigree of striker that they’re going for here because they are in a pretty dangerous predicament at Southampton at the moment, and they do have the look of a team that are going to struggle.

“Maybe they feel that players with something to prove and have that real potential is the route that they want to go down. So, Ramos is definitely one to keep an eye on.”
