Chelsea could now 'do something crazy' and table £125m bid at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea could set a new Premier League transfer record today with a £125m swoop for AC Milan forward Rafael Leao, according to journalist Simon Phillips.

It was reported by The Times yesterday afternoon that Chelsea were in talks to sign the nine-cap Portugal international, as well as Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez.

And it seems the Blues are in the market for attacking players today.

They’ve reportedly ‘walked away‘ from a deal to sign Everton winger Anthony Gordon due to a difference in valuation and also launched a late pursuit of PSG superstar Neymar, suggesting a wide forward is very much in their thoughts right now.

Chelsea appear to be on the verge reaching an agreement with Barcelona for former Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, which is perhaps unsurprising considering Armando Broja is the only out-and-out centre-forward in Thomas Tuchel’s squad.

Tellingly, the Blues have scored just six Premier League goals this season.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Phillips stated that AC Milan won’t accept offers for Leao, meaning Chelsea would need to pay his £125m release clause.

Rather incredibly though, Phillips could see the west London club making such an offer by the close of business today.

He said: “I have been told all along that AC Milan will reject offers for Leao – Chelsea would have to match his release clause which is around £125m. There is every chance of that happening. I can see Chelsea doing something crazy today and that could be one of the things.”

That’s a pretty ridiculous amount of money to pay for any footballer, and you have to wonder whether Chelsea would even consider this deal had they not endured such an underwhelming start to the season with two defeats in their first five games.
