Southampton: 161-game star could make shock stay at St Mary's

Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster may still extend his contract at the club, according to The Sun journalist Tom Barclay.

It has appeared likely that this would be Forster’s final season at St Mary’s, but that may no longer be the case.

The 34-year-old’s contract is set to expire at the end of June, meaning that he will be a free agent unless he reaches an agreement with Southampton before then.

Barclay has previously informed GIVEMESPORT that fellow Saints goalkeeper Alex McCarthy is close to agreeing a new deal with the South Coast club, suggesting that Forster may then be shown the exit door.

However, Forster, who has now played 161 games for Southampton, has been Ralph Hasenhuttl’s chosen shot-stopper since Boxing Day, with McCarthy ruled out due to a thigh problem, and he has performed well since coming into the team, which could give him a chance of being offered a new contract.

Barclays feels Southampton do want to bring in a younger goalkeeper, but he has suggested that Forster’s form could cause the club to change their plans, and they may hand him a contract extension instead.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “I think, from Southampton’s point of view, they would prefer to have a younger keeper developing behind one of the older keepers. But, Fraser Forster is playing so well, that I don’t think it can be ruled out still, that they won’t extend his deal as well. And maybe be in a similar situation as they are now.
