Steven Gerrard: Liverpool star's iconic performance vs Real Madrid in 2009

Liverpool will meet Real Madrid in the Champions League final on May 28, in Paris.

It’s sure to be a monumental occasion, as two of Europe’s most prestigious footballing powerhouses clash for the most coveted trophy of them all.

The two clubs have plenty of history between them on this stage. Most recently, Madrid got the better of Liverpool in the 2018 final in Kyiv, after a controversial incident and two disastrous goalkeeping errors helped the Spanish giants to a 3-1 win.

Travelling further back through the footballing history books, these two would meet in another European Cup final, with Paris hosting the occasion once again back in 1981.

The Reds got the better of Madrid on French soil, albeit by a narrow 1-0 margin and added a third European Cup to their collection.

But it’s not just been in finals that this fixture has served up classics. In 2009, Steven Gerrard put in one of his most iconic performances ever under the Anfield lights, against Los Blancos.

It was the Champions League round of 16 and Rafael Benitez’s side followed up a 1-0 win at the Bernabeu with a breathtaking display on their home patch, in which they romped to a comfortable 3-0 victory.

Liverpool’s captain, always the man for the big occasion, put in a commanding display in front of his home support and scored twice on route to victory – once from the penalty spot and another with a sumptuous half-volley from the edge of the area.
