Sofyan Amrabat would strengthen Manchester United but there are challenges to overcome

Interest in Sofyan Amrabat’s signature skyrocketed during the World Cup, a tournament in which he led an unfancied Moroccan side to a fourth-placed finish. Now, Manchester United are closely monitoring his situation.

At Qatar 2022 he was a fairly low-key selection in the Morocco squad, but arguably their best player by the end of the tournament. He showed quality with strong tackles, keeping out the midfields of Belgium, Croatia, Spain and Portugal in their tough run of games.

He has something to offer going forward as well. With an 87 per cent pass success rate, he was able to start Morocco’s counter-attacks that made them so dangerous.

So, what would he offer United if he made the move from Fiorentina?

The style he would have to employ at Old Trafford would be very different from the one he used at the World Cup.

For Morocco he was everywhere on the pitch, almost a one-man team at times, but his role at United is likely to require a calmer head, more positional discipline and sometimes less license to get forward.

Will he thrive in this structured environment, all while moving to a new country and playing in a new league?
