'Smarter than that' - Insider says Leeds may shock everyone with news emerging from Thorp Arch

Leeds United won’t appoint one of the obvious rumoured candidates to replace Marcelo Bielsa if he leaves this summer, according to insider Dean Jones.

The Argentine has been a magnificent manager for the Whites, transforming the club since arriving in 2018 and guiding his team back into the Premier League.

There seems to be increasing speculation regarding Bielsa’s future at Leeds, however, with no sign yet of him signing an extension on the deal that expires this summer.

A number of names have been linked with potentially replacing him at Thorp Arch, with news emerging on Thursday that former RB Leipzig and RB Salzburg boss Jesse Marsch is a current front-runner.

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jones, a ‘transfer insider‘, tipped Leeds to appoint someone that not many expect, however, saying it would be indicative of the way the club is run:

“I don’t think they would go for an obvious choice. I don’t think it will be the typical names that get touted around for managerial jobs in the Premier League. They’ll be smarter than that.”

It is certainly an opinion that is easy to agree with, with Leeds surely eyeing up someone with similar ideals to Bielsa, in order for it to be a seamless transition for the players.

They are highly unlikely to appoint a big name for the sake of it – Frank Lampard to Everton springs to mind – and instead dissect every possible candidate intensely.

This is assuming Bielsa leaves, of course, and there is still every chance that he could sign another one-year deal, which remains the best option for Leeds, despite a disappointing season.

He still has plenty to offer and should thrive once he is afforded the luxury of having key players such as Liam Cooper, Kalvin Phillips and Patrick Bamford making up
