Journalist says Leeds signing exciting 23 y/o would be a "gamble", Marsch knows all about him

Leeds United would be taking a huge risk if they sign New York City FC frontman Valentin Castellanos in the summer, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Whites are under new management, with Jesse Marsch being appointed as head coach on Monday, but the Yorkshire giants’ interest in Castellanos originated while Marcelo Bielsa was still at the helm.

Argentinian news outlet La Pagina Millonaria have revealed Leeds are willing to pay in the region of £10million to secure the services of Castellanos when the transfer window reopens in the summer.

The report suggests the Whites have contacted the Argentinian’s representatives to confirm their interest but Castellanos would prefer to return to his homeland and join River Plate.

Despite the frontman’s desire, TN Deportivo have hinted Leeds could be in the driving seat to get a deal over the line.

That is because the story claims River Plate are unable to afford the 23-year-old after their final bid of up to £8.8million was rejected by New York City FC.

Castellanos has been prolific in the United States and his firepower guided his current employers to a first-ever MLS Cup last season.

O’Rourke understands why Castellanos has worked his way onto Leeds’ radar, having finished last term as MLS’ leading marksman.

However, the journalist has warned the Whites would be taking a risk which may not pay off if they strengthen their interest.
