It might still be pre-season but Brendan Rodgers is excited by what he is seeing with his Celtic squad, reports Michael Gannon from America. And that means the rest of Scottish football should perhaps be worried.

The Hoops seem to have picked up this summer where they left off at the end of last season and the concerning thing for rivals is the fact Rodgers hasn’t really even got going in the transfer market just yet. It was fitting the Irishman and his squad got a tour around the University of Carolina’s basketball campus – where Michael Jordan came through – on the morning of their 4-3 friendly victory against Manchester City.

Because after watching the performance against Pep Guardiola’s side, it looks like with a couple of additions, the Premiership title could be a slam dunk for Celts this coming season. There’s no doubt Rodgers needs new recruits. He’s said so himself and he needs his board to start thinking bold. But it’s also clear he’s got the hardcore of a strong squad already.

Rodgers rolled out most of his main men against the young City side the other night in Chapel Hill. Guardiola had Erling Haaland and Jack Grealish, but the rest of the team was made up of hot prospects. But that doesn’t mean Celts shouldn’t take encouragement from the display. Far from it. The Hoops were quick and slick, it was high-pressing, high intensity and everything Rodgers always demands from his sides.

And the way this team has returned from the spectacular charge to the Double last term has got the manager feeling a similar emotion to the supporters. Excitement.
