Six Man City players are auditioning for new roles during pre-season

Pre-season can be a good time to wipe the slate clean and go again.

For Manchester City, the message will be to put the high of winning the treble behind them, and focus fully on defending their three titles, improving in the Carabao Cup, and adding the three invitational competitions they are now into their collection.

There has already been one incoming and one outgoing, with more transfer business rumoured, as Pep Guardiola looks to build a squad that can fight on seven fronts this season. He will likely do so with a small squad like the one that won the treble, filled with versatile players who can fill-in across multiple positions, rather than two or three options in each position.

That gives some players a chance to show Guardiola that they can play in a new position, while others will be looking to make an impression in pre-season after finding themselves on the fringes last term.

A good place to start when discussing players with a point to prove is Kalvin Phillips, who has made no secret of his intentions to kick on after a disappointing first year at City. The Blues will fly to Japan on the same day that Phillips' documentary charting his move from Leeds to City is released in the UK, with his promotional interviews last week underlining his desire to learn from his struggles so far.

Now is time for Phillips to put his money where his mouth is, and with three friendly games in Asia, there is no better time to make the most of increased game-time compared to the limited minutes he got last season. If Phillips can't make an impression over the next three weeks, he will struggle to get opportunities again.
