Sir Jim Ratcliffe can use secret weapon to bring Dan Ashworth to Manchester United

Sir Jim Ratcliffe may have only just had his £1.3billion minority bid ratified by the Premier League but that has not stopped the 71-year-old from making moves already.

Incoming CEO Omar Berreda is widely seen as an INEOS appointment despite it technically being a Glazers recruit. Meanwhile, plans are being discussed about the future of Old Trafford and training facilities at Carrington as Ratcliffe spies a significant overhaul of sporting matters.

While such long-term decisions need to be made, Ratcliffe has a number of near-future tasks to complete. One of them is to decide what happens at sporting director level. A number of names have been linked including former Monaco chief Paul Mitchell, Milan legend Paolo Maldini and Dougie Freedman of Crystal Palace.

John Murtough’s future in the position is in the balance having seen former CEO Richard Arnold leave his post at Manchester United in December, prior to Ratcliffe’s arrival. INEOS is targeting Newcastle chief Dan Ashworth, although may have a tough task to prise him away from St James’ Park.

Speaking in January, Magpies CEO Darren Eales is hoping the former Brighton and FA official stays on Tyneside. "Dan's done a great job, there's a lot more work to be done and we're hopeful he's here for the long term. He's certainly enjoying his time at the moment," he said.

It is thought that Newcastle would command a hefty compensation package for Ashworth, which would pose a question for Ratcliffe amid the United’s position within Financial Fair Play. Ashworth also said in November that he is “thoroughly engaged” with the project at Newcastle.
