Sir Alex Ferguson reveals special Rangers memories against Eintracht Frankfurt as he’s gifted lifetime membership

Sir Alex Ferguson has been awarded a lifetime membership at German side Eintracht Frankfurt after they played a big part in his early years in football.

The Bundesliga side revealed how they sent a delegation to meet the 82-year-old Godfather of Scottish football to present him with his honour, just a few weeks after they took on his former club Aberdeen in the Europa Conference League. Ferguson was presented with a shirt with his name and No. 10 emblazoned on it. And they said on their website: “Alex Ferguson becomes a lifelong member of Eintracht Frankfurt. There are plenty of points of contact - and were the reason for a personal conversation with the legendary trainer and manager.”

On receiving his accolade, the former Manchester United boss spoke of two key moments that Eintracht Frankfurt, who defeated Rangers in the Europa League Final two years ago, played in his early years. They were the opposition for a European Cup semi final match he attended at Ibrox in 1960, with the Germans beating the Light Blues on their way to the famous final at Hampden Park which Real Madrid won 7-3. And seven years later Ferguson played his first mach for Rangers against the Germans.

He told the German club’s website of that game: “It was my first game for the Rangers. We won 5-3, but I wouldn’t call it a revenge for 1960. I remember scoring a hat-trick with Tilkowski in goal for Frankfurt. Grabowksi played as well. He was only 22 at the time and went on to play until ’79, amazing. He also played in the 1974 world cup, and I still remember his cross for the Müller goal against Italy in 1970.”
