Simon Jordan claims Rangers is step DOWN for Philippe Clement as he asks Graeme Souness 'so what' over manager stance

Simon Jordan reckons Philippe Clement has taken a step back by choosing Rangers as the next step in his career.

But the former Crystal Palace owner isn't buying Graeme Souness' assertion that Frank Lampard would have been the better pick. Clement has got off to a promising start at Ibrox with the latest of four domestic wins on the spin sending them into the Viaplay Cup final.

They also picked up a decent point on their travels against Sparta Prague and will be looking for more Europa League progress on Thursday when the Czech side come to Glasgow. There were a number of contenders to replace Michael Beale with Lampard one of the early picks, but despite support from Souness, he didn't advance to the later stages of the recruitment process.

A debate sparked on talkSPORT on Lampard and what comes next for him, and whether pundit Jordan judges high-profile ex-pros more harshly than an unknown. Host Jim White asked Jordan if Clement had the credentials to succeed at Rangers off this back of this question and Jordan insisted Ibrox was a possible step DOWN for the Belgian.

He said: "I looked at his record and I thought he had a pretty decent record actually. I actually moving to Rangers is possibly (a step down) in argument terms. Not in terms of the scale of the club but the quality of the league, a little bit of a step sideways if not down.

"Souness was interesting the other day. As much as I take a lot of what Graeme says at face value because it's Graeme, his argument for Lampard doing the job is he still has the hunger and ambition. So bleeding what? Has he got the capability?"
