Simon Jordan bites at Steven Gerrard comment in heated talkSPORT debate

Steven Gerrard will watch former club Rangers take on Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League final this evening.

The Liverpool and England legend quit Ibrox in November to become the new head coach of Aston Villa. Gerrard has won 10 of his 27 games in charge of Villa and leads the team into their final two Premier League games with Burnley and Manchester City this week.

By joining Villa, Gerrard passed up the chance to compete in Europe with Rangers, and they have enjoyed a spectacular run to Seville under new boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst. Rangers overturned a first leg deficit to defeat German club RB Leipzig in the semi-finals.

Rangers’ success has sparked a debate amongst talkSPORT pundits Trevor Sinclair and Simon Jordan. Sinclair has credited Gerrard with building a Rangers team that reached a European final, but Jordan insists van Bronckhorst is more deserving of praise.

Sinclair said: “You look at the mentality, the achievement last year of winning the SPFL, that team spirit that Steven Gerrard and his coaching staff got them to harness, and just the way they are as a team - these are Steven Gerrard’s players.

“Gio has come in and failed in the league, but the fact he’s been able to get them to a Europa League final gives him a huge amount of kudos.”

Jordan barbed back: “Saying it’s someone’s team, then you might as well say Thomas Tuchel won the Champions League with Frank Lampard’s team. You have a group of players, you improve them, you enhance them. Just because somebody else signed them, it doesn’t necessarily detract from the person that’s there.”
