"Shows the ambition the club have got" – Journalist drops major claim on 362-game Rangers target

Being interested in signing players in the calibre of Sam Johnstone shows the ambition of Rangers, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Scottish champions are keen on signing the West Brom goalkeeper, who’s out of contract this summer, although Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side face competition from the Premier League.

Steve Bruce all-but confirmed that Johnstone will be leaving the Hawthorns at the end of the season having revealed that he won’t play again this term.

The Daily Mail believe that Rangers are in the running for his signature, with the Ibrox side looking to bring in a replacement for 40-year-old Allan McGregor, who’s expected to depart following the expiration of his contract at the end of June.

However, Rangers are in a tussle with the likes of Tottenham, Newcastle, Southampton, and West Ham, who are also hoping to sign the £7.2m-rated stopper for nothing when the window reopens for business.

O’Rourke knows that fending off interest from the Premier League won’t be easy but believes that simply being in the race shows the “ambition” of the club.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “I think it would be a big ask for Rangers to try and land Sam Johnstone but shows the ambition the club have got.

“Sam Johnstone is going to be attracted to a lot of clubs as a free agent, but if he went to Rangers he would definitely be number one there, whereas if he went to Tottenham or Manchester United, there’s no guarantee that he would be first choice at either of those clubs.”
