Should more roads be 20mph?

Last week the Welsh government voted through proposals for a universal 20mph speed limit on certain roads across the country.

It sees residential roads and busy pedestrian streets limited to 20mph, with a pilot scheme having already been in place in several areas.

And with Wales set to roll this out all over the country, we want to know if you think a similar scheme should be replicated in Manchester.

The streets that will be affected are roads where a "system of street lighting furnished by means of lamps placed not more than 200 yards apart".

The plans are set to be put into full operation in September 2023 and will cost around £33 million.

Speaking about the limit, climate minister Julie James said: "The future of our towns and cities depends on our ability to move around sustainably and on solutions that have a positive impact on public health environment and communities.

"That is why we will use the principle that walking, cycling and active travel must remain the best options for short urban journeys and a 20mph default speed limit will help achieve this."

The Welsh government have also said that the scheme will yield a positive financial return of around £25 million over 30 years, saying this will come from cost savings associated with reduced emergency services and hospital treatment.

Do you think that Manchester should adopt a similar policy? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section.
