Shortlist for 2023 Stewartry Sports Awards announced

The shortlist for this year’s Stewartry Sports Awards has been announced.

Sponsors and members of Stewartry Sports Council met recently to go through the nominations ahead of the awards evening at Castle Douglas Golf Club on Friday, November 17.

And it was a tough job with some fantastic submissions after another outstanding year for the district’s competitors, coaches, clubs and teams.

This year’s contenders for sports personality of the year, sponsored by The Galloway News, are Sean Allan for judo, Rebecca Boardman for ball hockey and Lewis Martin for cycling.

The trio are also on the shortlist for outstanding achievement at club level, sponsored by Jas P Wilson, where they are joined by Ailsa Brannock for golf and David Gourlay for bowls.

The nominees for junior sports personality, sponsored by The Co-operative, are Sam Barbour and Josh Stewart for cycling, Sam Brown for judo, Jasmine McCulloch for rugby, cricket, netball and horse riding, Dylan McRobert for fishing and clay pigeon shooting and Maria de Silva for table tennis.

Jasmine, Dylan and Josh are also contenders for the outstanding junior achievement at club level prize, sponsored by J Smith Fencing, along with Fallon McGimpsey for tennis.

And Dylan has also been shortlisted for the newcomer to sport award, sponsored by Helen Bell, along with cyclist Chloe Bryson and rugby player Jessica McCulloch.

Dalbeattie Star Girls and Ladies and Stewartry Netball Club will battle for team of the year, sponsored by BSW Timber.

Club of the year, sponsored by Sulwath Brewery, is between Castle Douglas Golf Club, Solway Yacht Club, Stewartry Gymnastics, Stewartry Rugby Club, Studio Velo and Threave Rovers Youth Development.
