Sheffield Wednesday-linked midfielder released by Cardiff City as squad overhaul continues

Sheffield Wednesday transfer target Will Vaulks is on his way out of Cardiff City. The Wales international is to leave the Championship club at the end of June following the expiry of his contract.

Former Rotherham United midfielder Vaulks made 117 appearances in his three year spell at the club, scoring 11 goals. Cardiff posted a farewell message to Vaulks on their Twitter account. "An inspirational person, with a rocket of a shot; Diolch, Will," the Bluebirds statement read.

It was claimed earlier this week that the Owls had held talks with representatives of Vaulks regarding a potential move to Hillsborough. It is thought a potential stumbling block could be Vaulks' wage demands.

Vaulks was on Wednesday's radar in the summer of 2019 when Steve Bruce was in charge. He ended up moving to Cardiff for an undisclosed fee.

The 28-year-old is among eight senior players to have been confirmed to be leaving Cardiff as Bluebirds boss Steve Morison continues his major overhaul. Other names include ex-Wednesday centre-half Aden Flint.

It is believed Vaulks, who made 36 appearances in the Championship last term, would consider dropping down into League One if the terms of the deal are right. Central midfield is a position Wednesday boss Darren Moore wants to strengthen ahead of the 2022/23 season.

The Owls' current options in the middle of the park are Barry Bannan, George Byers, Dennis Adeniran, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and Alex Hunt. Australian international Massimo Luongo has been offered fresh terms to prolong his Wednesday stay but it remains up in the air whether he will remain at the club.
