Sheffield Wednesday 0-0 Swansea City: Visitors draw another blank as barren run drags on

Swansea City have now gone over seven hours of football without scoring a goal, after playing out an insipid goalless draw at Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday night.

Jay Fulton came closest to bringing his side's recent goal drought to an end, rattling the post from close range early on in a first half otherwise devoid of tangible attacking sparkle.

Neither side really did enough to win the game, with Ronald's effort midway through the second half the only time either goalkeeper was called into action.

The result stretches Swansea's recent winless run to five games, their longest such run since the supposed dark days of Michael Duff last season.

Swansea actually have two points fewer than they did under the Northern Irishman at this stage of the season, a stat that will understandably cause some to wonder just how much progress the club has really made over the last 12 months.

As head coach, Williams will inevitably find himself on the end of some of the criticism for these recent difficulties. But the problems at Swansea right now feel more deeply rooted. Indeed, one wonders if there's even any point in once again stressing the shortcomings within this squad. Worryingly, it's something of a default setting right now, and Williams' biggest challenge right now is to try and crack a way of making this work.

Williams has seemingly thrown his backing behind the hand he's been dealt when repeatedly quizzed on the level of depth, but privately he must surely believe this squad needs a little more.
