Sheffield United's 'seven-figure' bid revealed as Champions League defender comes into focus
The identity of Sheffield United's 'seven-figure' bid has been revealed. Anel Ahmedhodzic, of Swedish giants Malmo, was this weekend linked with an offer from the club.
The Bosnian international defender is the player CEO Stephen Bettis admitted at the start of the window is one of two bids on the table. Yorkshire Live revealed last week they are having to play a waiting game due to an obligation from another side.
French outfit Bordeaux, where he spent the second half of last season on loan, have an exclusive right to buy providing they submit their offer in a previously agreed timeframe.
As it stands, they have yet to do so and United are hoping to steal a march on other teams by registering their interest early so that they are in pole position when that deadline expires.
Sheffield United tried to lure him to Bramall Lane in January but he made the move to the Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux instead. The six-times French champions finished bottom of Ligue 1 and due to financial issues have been hit with a further penalty by DNCG - France's football watchdog - and relegated down to the third tier.
The crisis club is said to have a financial deficit of around €40m (£34m), however, they are appealing the decision. In a statement, it said: "Girondins de Bordeaux will appeal the DNCG's decision to relegate the club to National 1.
"It is with dismay that FCGB notes the DNCG's decision to announce an administrative relegation to the third tier. The club will obviously appeal the decision immediately.
"This brutal decision, after nearly two hours of hearings in good conditions, deprives the club of continuing its strategy to clean up its finances and write a new page in Bordeaux's history."
