Sergio Romero joins new club after interest in Manchester United return

Sergio Romero has joined Argentine giants Boca Juniors on a free transfer.

The former Manchester United goalkeeper left after a year with Italian side Venezia this summer, in which he made 16 appearances for the relegated Serie A side, and has now decided to return to his native Argentina. However, Romero was interested in a return to Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag is looking to add to his senior goalkeeper options of David de Gea and Tom Heaton following the loan departure of Dean Henderson for Nottingham Forest. The Manchester Evening News reported at the end of June that Romero would have been open to a United comeback in a back-up role.

A source close to the player admitted that Romero still has a lot of love for the club and that "he would always come back" if an offer was made for him. That offer never came, however, with United yet to sign another goalkeeper.

Romero will wear the No.25 shirt at Boca and is looking forward to meeting back up with former United teammate Marcos Rojo. He said: “I always talk to Marcos,Ever since he arrived, I’ve been itching to come to Boca too. He knew about the club’s goals and that it was possible. I will see how the dressing room will be, I will try to add because we have players who are doing great things.”

Romero also revealed Boca tried to sign him from United in 2018 but the club's asking price was too high. He added: “Now it’s because of a different context. The last time Guillermo (Barros Shelotto) called me, Boca wanted to buy my Manchester United pass. It was necessary to invest a lot of money and the situation was very difficult, impossible.
