Seán Cavanagh: 'Time moves on and I'm not sure Dublin are'

While it is still early in the year, Seán Cavanagh does not see any "massive improvement" from what Dublin served up in 2022, adding that the lack of new names emerging is a worry.

The Dubs are now operating in Division 2, and are so far unbeaten, though they had to pull it out of the bag to edge out Clare by the bare minimum at Croke Park on Saturday evening.

Speaking on Allianz League Sunday, Tyrone's three-time All-Ireland winner is not impressed with what Dessie Farrell's side have served up so far in the league.

"I don't see a massive improvement from the Dublin of last year," said Cavanagh.

"They are struggling in most games. You look at their scores: they scraped by Kildare by a point, you look at Kildare at the moment and they are not going great. They beat Limerick by nine and Limerick are losing games by an average of 12 points; and then they were lucky to beat Cork by two, Cork could have won that very easily. And last night they scraped by Clare by a point.

"You compare that to the likes of Derry who are annihiliating everyone in sight.

"If you're asking me to call that right now, I think Dublin will really struggle. That's where I think they're at and that's not discrediting them.

"They are looking in the rear-view mirror too much, They are reliant on Dean Rock and he has been a great servant but there are no new names coming through.

"It's the same names - Craig Dias was on the bench last night. It feels as if they are looking back at the 2017 and 2018 [team]. Time moves on and I'm not sure Dublin are."
