Scott McTominay is proving Ralf Rangnick's Manchester United claim right

Manchester United may yet find a role for Scott McTominay under Erik ten Hag after another display of his leadership for Scotland.

The 26-year-old has struggled for regular minutes this season under the Dutchman but continues to shine for his country. McTominay scored a huge goal for Scotland as they beat Georgia 2-0 at Hampden Park on Tuesday night.

That was his fifth goal in three home games for his national side. Steve Clarke has found a goalscoring role for him in midfield and seems to be getting the most from McTominay.

Rain delayed the match for 90 minutes, with Georgia's players determined to try and get the match called off with Scotland leading 1-0. In the tunnel, the cameras caught McTominay berating the opposition alongside his teammate.

Whilst United fans may be split on their view of McTominay's place in the midfield pecking order, there can be little argument about his personality and leadership qualities. That was something spotted very early on by Ralf Rangnick in his short-lived tenure as United boss.

"He is an academy boy, his energy is amazing," he said last year. "He now also starts scoring goals and also with some leadership skills. I wouldn't be surprised if, in a couple of years, he would be the captain of this team."

While the Scot has struggled to cement his place in the United starting XI since Rangnick's departure, the leadership skills he shows while on international duty cannot be questioned. It's unlikely he will ever become the permanent captain of United as Rangnick predicted, though the former interim boss' comments on his credentials as a leader look to be on the money.
