Erik ten Hag paid huge Sir Alex Ferguson compliment after debut Manchester United season

Manchester United fans believe Erik ten Hag is already the best manager the club has had since Sir Alex Ferguson retired.

The legendary manager retired from the game following 27 remarkable years in charge at Old Trafford in 2013 after winning his final Premier League title. However, his departure sent the club into a downward spiral that they are only now picking themselves out of after a decade.

David Moyes was handpicked by Ferguson to be his successor but it transpired to be a disastrous pick. It would have been hard for anyone to take the job but the former Everton boss was not up to the task and was sacked before his first season had even concluded.

Louis van Gaal was next and though there were improvements in results, silverware won and several moments of hilarity, the Dutchman's football was incredibly laborious and boring. He was sacked within hours of winning the FA Cup to be replaced by Jose Mourinho.

The iconic manager promised big but didn't deliver. His football was also tedious but because it was incredibly negative rather than possession based. But whereas Van Gaal lightened the mood with his humour, United became a toxic environment with the dour Mourinho at the helm.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was a ray of sunshine breaking through the grey clouds when he initially took charge in a caretaker capacity but the side's dramatic improvement under his stewardship earned him the job permanently. This turned out to be a mistake as well as the United legend's shortcomings as a tactician soon became evident, but Ralf Rangnick did little to turn things around when he came in on an interim basis.
