Scott McTominay is Man United 'soldier' as Dimitar Berbatov makes Erik Ten Hag plea over Scotland star

Dimitar Berbatov has called on Erik Ten Hag to return Scott McTominay to his starting XI after the Old Trafford "soldier's" recent form.

The midfielder may be a first pick for his country, but has struggled to win over the Manchester United manager, often finding himself on the bench. Many believed his time at the club was over and a summer move was on the cards, with Newcastle and West Ham heavily linked. But McTominay stayed put and his recent stoppage time salvage job with two goals against Brentford was a timely reminder to Ten Hag as to what he's capable of.

McTominay has been a regular goalscorer for Scotland (whether they count or not) and has helped fire Steve Clarke's men to the Euro 2024 finals in Germany next summer. But former United forward berbatov reckons he's done enough in red to warrant a run in the team now attention returns to the English Premier League.

"After scoring two goals against Brentford, Scott McTominay will be hoping to get more opportunities to start matches," the Bulgarian told Betfair. "We'll have to see what's going to happen, but watching from the outside, you'd have to say yes he has done enough.

"His two goals were very important for Man United. Having said that, like everyone in the squad, there needs to be more consistency. When you're given an opportunity, you need to show the best of what you can do.

"I've always liked McTominay. He's a soldier. He runs everywhere and tries to do the best he can. In the last game, he was in the best position twice to score the goals - he was the unusual hero and that's what you need when things aren't going right.
