Scott Arfield issues Rangers rebuild challenge to Fashion Sakala with one improvement a must for 'iconic' tradition

The Rangers salute is being put on Scott Arfield's shelf - that is until Fashion Sakala overtakes him on the goal chart.

Michael Beale is undergoing a revamp of his Light Blues squad after a disappointing season, and the Londoner has opted to not renew the contract of the veteran midfielder, who joined Rangers in 2018. He's helped them to a Premiership and Scottish Cup trophy, but now a new era is on the horizon.

Sakala is part of the squad heading into the overhaul and nabbed Arfield's trademark salute during a 2-2 draw with Hearts last month. There's no big backstory behind it, but the 34-year-old insists the Zambian can only have his wish of keeping it if he surpasses the 43 he netted during five years in blue. Sakala need 19 and his now former teammate wants to see him hit the net more often in the season ahead.

When asked for the story behind the salute celebration, Arfield responded to Rangers TV: "The story isn't that exciting, I made it up to be exciting and it doesn't even make sense to be fair!

"But it's iconic, isn't it, when I walk around and see wee boys and girls doing the salute, it's an amazing feeling. My wee girls love it and Fashion Sakala really loved it as well.

" He says he's going to take it and carry it on with Rangers but I don't think that is true! He needs to score more goals and if he scores more goals than me, he can keep it!"
