Scotland Player of the Year shortlist revealed as Scott McTominay makes late bid with double brace

The shortlist for the William Hill Men’s International Player of the Year has been confirmed

Voted for the Scottish Football Writers Association, the best Scotland performer of the year will be revealed next month with Steve Clarke’s men now out of action until June after a stunning start to their Euro 2024 Group A qualifying campaign. A 3-0 win over Cyprus was followed up with Clarke’s finest hour as Spain were beaten 2-0 at Hampden on Tuesday night as Scotland went out on their own as group leaders with six points from six.

Scott McTominay made a late bid to scoop the gong with two goals off the bench against Cyprus, then another double against Spain after getting the nod from the start three days later. John McGinn was also on target against the Cypriots, and his habit of scoring big goals for his country is a welcome one. He netted in a 3-0 win over Ukraine back in September as well as the 4-1 victory in Armenia last June.

Callum McGregor’s levels are just as high in dark blue as they are in green and white Hoops. He's now passed the 50 cap milestone and is firmly established as one of the leaders in Steve Clarke’s squad. Kieran Tierney hasn’t had the best time of it at Arsenal of late, finding himself frozen out under Mikel Arteta. But he showed just how key he is to Scotland with a surging run that led to McTominay’s second goal in midweek.
