Scotland fans tease England over World Cup Final heartache as they gladly forfeit 'unofficial world champions' chance

Scotland legend Denis Law was famously on the golf course when England won the World Cup in 1966 - and threw his cubs away in disgust when the news was broken to him that the Auld Enemy had beaten West Germany at Wembley.

So it’s fair to say that the Lionesses claiming women’s World Cup glory Down Under 57 years later might not have gone down to well north of the border. Which is why there was a sigh of relief among the Tartan Army as they were spared that as Spain triumphed in the final in Sydney thanks to the only goal of the game from Olga Carmona.

England’s first game after 1966 came against Scotland when Sir Alf Ramsey's triumphant team were defeated, giving Scotland the crown of unofficial world champions, with Law on the scoresheet. And it would have been the same scenario again had England won, with Sarina Wiegman's side facing Scotland at the Stadium of Light in Sunderland on Friday, September 22.

But it didn’t happen and fans are lapping it up. One wrote on social media: “So, do Scotland get a bank holiday now?” Another added: “Everyone is having a party today in Scotland. Well done Spain. Viva Espana.” Another had a meme with The Office character David Brent with the message “Go get the Spanish flags out.” And the account @StillGame_SPFL posted a video of characters Jack and Victor celebrating under the line “Scotland fans checking the England score while pretending they don’t care”.
