Lionesses and Man City star Alex Greenwood issues injury update after World Cup Final defeat

Manchester City defender Alex Greenwood has shared an update on the gruesome eye injury that she sustained in England's Women's World Cup Final defeat to Spain.

The Lionesses made history by becoming the first senior England side since 1966 to reach the last two, however Olga Carmona's goal saw the Spanish triumph at Sydney's Stadium Australia. Greenwood was a standout performer for the Lionesses throughout the tournament, but she was almost forced off in the final after an aerial clash with Spain winger Salma Paralluelo.

Greenwood appeared to take a knee to the face and spent a considerable amount of time on the turf while she received physio treatment. After being patched up, the City centre-back got back to her feet and played on as England pressed to find an equaliser.

The extent of Greenwood's injury became clear on Monday, when she was spotted at Sydney Airport sporting a black eye and a deep cut beneath her right eyebrow. And the 29-year-old has now taken to social media to share a photo of her injury.

Posting on her Instagram story, Greenwood shared a snap of her swollen eye alongside the caption: "Healing nicely". The defender is among a host of England stars who have shared emotional posts reflecting on this summer's tournament in recent days.

"This one hurts a lot and will for a while," Greenwood wrote on Instagram. "However I just want to say Thank you to the whole team I have just spent the last 9 weeks with, it was an incredible journey with amazing people, I am so proud of you all.

"Thank you
