Scotland boss Steve Clarke says standards are important against the Netherlands, as he opens the door for Liam Kelly

Scotland boss Steve Clarke says it’s not important who starts for him over the next two friendlies, but their performances when they play.

Clarke is finalising his line-up for the friendly in the Netherlands tonight, before welcoming Northern Ireland to Hampden on Tuesday.

And the gaffer says he hasn’t yet made his mind up on his goalkeepers, saying they’re better than even he thought.

That could spell good news for Motherwell’s No.1 Liam Kelly, who is scrapping it out for a place on the plane to the Euros alongside Zander Clark, Angus Gunn and Craig Gordon.

Clarke said: “The goalkeeper situation is interesting. I’m not telling you who is playing.

“The keepers are even better than I thought they were.

“They are really pushing. Training has been great. I maybe should have brought four keepers more often.”

Further up the pitch is also a mystery, with Clarke saying: “Lawrence Shankland could start, so could Lyndon Dykes. So could Che Adams.

“Over the two games all the strikers will get minutes.

“It doesn’t matter who starts, it’s not important. It’s more important how they play when they get to the pitch, and what their contribution to the team is.”

Meanwhile, Clarke hopes his side can hit top form in the friendlies as they prepare for the tournament in Germany this summer.

He said: “It would be nice. It’s obviously not crucial because it’s a competitive friendly, but we don’t like the fact that it’s five games since we had a win. We think we’re better than that.

“We want to get wins on the board as quick as we can, and this would be a good time to start.

“In the first five competitive games last year we scored 12 goals, conceded one and won five games.
