Schoolboy drowns in Lake Windermere just days after 16th birthday

A father has spoken of his heartbreak after his "diamond" son drowned on an end-of-year school trip to the Lake District.

Abuzr Mirza was visiting Lake Windermere when he "got into difficulty in the water". The tragic incident happened on the afternoon of Wednesday, July 24 - just days after Abuzr had celebrated his 16th birthday.

The Health and Safety Executive, which looks into the possible culpability of businesses in deaths and injuries, and Cumbria Police have both launched an investigation. An inquest into the death of Abuzr, from Burnley, Lancashire, is due to open at Cumbria Coroners Court on August 13, Lancs Live reports.

In a heartbreaking post on Facebook, Abuzr's father, Osman Beg, described his son as a "diamond". He added that he had drowned while helping two other people who were in difficulty in the water, although this is unconfirmed.

Mr Beg said: "As I've always said to my diamond always think about others before your self. He was and still is a perfect son I wish every one is blessed with a son like my son. Just perfect in every way.

He added: "Final words please keep your children close and always support them in what they want to do."

The teen's body was recovered from the water near to Brockhole at about 11.45pm on July 24. A search had began earlier that evening.

Abuzr's funeral took place at the Masjid Farooq E Azam in Burnley and he was buried at Burnley Cemetery. He was a student at Dawatul Imaan Darul Uloom in Bradford and a spokesperson for the school told the Telegraph and Argus: "This tragic event has had a profound effect on our whole school community. Everyone at the school is heartbroken.
