Sam Lammers Rangers to Utrecht transfer finer details emerge

Sam Lammers has been backed to hit the ground running after exiting Rangers to join Utrecht on loan for the season.

The Dutch striker moved to Ibrox in the summer for around £2.2million from Atalanta but fell out of favour after Michael Beale’s exit. New boss Philippe Clement has now sanctioned a loan for the rest of the campaign to free up budget and to allow him to add to his own Ibrox squad this month.

There is no clause for Utrecht to sign Lammers permanently and he also still has another two years left on his Ibrox contract. Utrecht technical director Jordy Ziudam said: “We welcome a driven striker in Sam. He has specific qualities that we can use within the team. He knows the Eredivisie well, has gained experience abroad in recent years and can be deployed immediately. We are happy that Sam chose us and we can count on him for the rest of this season.”

Lammers netted just two goals in 31 appearances for Rangers. His best season in terms of goals came during his time at Heerenveen, on loan from PSV Eindhoven, but since then he has struggled to hit the heights. The 26-year-old won a move to Atalanta but had indifferent loans at Eintracht Frankfurt, Empoli and Sampdoria.

Turkish left-back Ridvan Yilmaz could be the next first-team player to exit Rangers. Italian side Verona are keen to do a deal while reports in Turkey claim Galatasaray are also interested in taking him home.

Rangers’ recruitment team are looking for a left-back just now as Yilmaz could go and Borna Barasic is out of contract in the summer. Rangers had Belgian international Michy Batshuayi put to them but the club won’t be making a move.

The striker is out of favour at Fenerbahce and is looking for a short-term move to safeguard his place at Euro
