Rutherglen Glencairn boss insists there's no favourite in derby clashes

Rutherglen Glencairn boss Joe Pryce says there are no favourites in a derby clash against Cambuslang Rangers – regardless of how the sides are doing elsewhere.

Glencairn host their near-neighbours at the Hamish B. Allan Stadium on Saturday, sitting top of the West of Scotland First Division, while Camby are 13th.

Both sides go into the clash on the back of defeats, with Glens knocked out of the senior Scottish Cup with a 4-2 defeat at Penucuik Athletic and Camby exiting the Scottish Junior Cup with a 7-0 hammering at Petershill – but Pryce says that counts for absolutely nothing.

He said: “There’s no such thing as favourites.

“I’ve been involved in enough of them over the years – played in them, coached and managed in them, so I know what they’re like.

“The first time I played in one of these was 30-odd years ago and there were never favourites in this game.

“It doesn’t matter what league you’re in, whether one is a league above or below, there’s never a favourite – it’s always tight, always edgy, and they’re always full-blooded encounters.

“But it’s a game we’re really looking forward to.

“Paul [McColl, Cambuslang boss] is an experienced manager and will have his team well organised and well drilled, and we know that.

“They’re our local rivals, but they’re also our good friends at Cambuslang, and we’re really looking forward to seeing them.”

Saturday’s clash is the first competitive match between the sides in five years, and Pryce hopes that provides a bit of an extra edge.

“It will be good to play them in a competitive match, and we’re really looking forward to it,” he said.

“Both teams will be up for it and looking forward to it, and hopefully we’ll get a good wee crowd in.
