Rugby World Cup 2023 pool permutations - which teams can still qualify?

There are still six places in the Rugby World Cup quarter-finals up for grabs ahead of the final round of pool fixtures.

England are joined by Wales as the only two nations that have booked their place in the last eight, so far. Steve Borthwick’s side have recorded three straight victories in Pool D to go through with a game to spare, while Wales have also started the competition in equally impressive style.

It means that there is still plenty to play for the majority of countries involved and plenty of permutations to be worked out along the way. With bonus points awarded for scoring four or more tries and for losing by seven points or less, there will be plenty of back-and-forth in the group standings before the games are up.

Here is every possible permutation across all four pools:

France, 13 pts; New Zealand, 10pts; Italy, 10pts; Uruguay, 5pts; Namibia, 0pts

For France, simply avoiding defeat to Italy would see them top the group. They would also claim first place with two losing bonus points, if Italy also failed to earn a try-bonus point.

In terms of New Zealand, a bonus-point win over Uruguay will see them through to the quarter-finals.

Should all three of France, Italy and New Zealand finish on 15 points, the All Blacks would finish top of the group on points difference. Italy would then finish second due to their head-to-head win over France.
