Ruben Amorim responds to question about replacing Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag

Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim refused to comment when asked about the possibility of replacing Erik ten Hag at Manchester United.

United lost successive home games 3-0 against Manchester City and a weakened Newcastle in the space of just a few days and they have lost five of their first 10 games at Old Trafford for the first time since 1930-31.

Ten Hag enjoyed a brilliant first year at the club, but the team are in freefall and there is growing pressure around his position.

Although Ten Hag has spent in excess of £400million during his tenure, United have spectacularly regressed this season and some players in the dressing room are now beginning to have doubts over his methods.

The bookmakers have slashed prices on Ten Hag losing his job and Amorim, who has been previously linked with the club, was asked whether he could be tempted by a move to United after Sporting Lisbon's game on Thursday.

"This year I’m not going to go back to the same conversation as last year," Amorim said. "I’m not going to make any kind of comment on these situations. We don’t know the future, it depends on the results."

He added: "Regarding the future, I have an idea for the end of the season but I won’t say it now. But the results and the context take us to something different. I don’t want to be commenting on these things. I have not been contacted by Manchester United."

Amorim is believed to have a release clause of around €10m in his contract and he was asked whether it could be triggered.

He replied: "I’m not going to be commenting on that. I will respect the contract, everything that is there will be fulfilled."
