Roy Keane slams 'disgraceful' Chelsea players for same issue he saw at Manchester United

Roy Keane slammed the Chelsea squad for their "disgraceful" mentality last season in a rant that sounded very similar to his criticism of Ralf Rangnick's Manchester United.

Chelsea kicked off their 2023/24 Premier League season with a hard-fought 1-1 draw at home to Liverpool on Sunday. It was Mauricio Pochettino's first game in charge at Stamford Bridge after he was appointed as Blues boss in May.

The former Tottenham manager takes over a side who, despite spending over £600million in the last 12 months, finished in the bottom half last season. The expensively assembled squad were accused of downing tools when they didn't take to Graham Potter, and interim boss Frank Lampard also questioned their commitment once there was nothing to play for.

This summer has seen 12 players leave Stamford Bridge permanently as Pochettino attempts to shift the culture, and Keane explained the importance of doing so in a squad that seemed to give up last season.

“They’ve obviously made the decision to let go of a lot of players, there’s been a lot of changes in Chelsea over the last 12 months, it’s quite crazy from the outside looking in," he told Sky Sports. "They’ve got the manager sorted out, but I’m worried about their mentality.

“You heard all the managers last year, even Frank Lampard say that there wasn’t any motivation, no heart in the team, they didn’t want to play which I think is disgraceful if you consider yourself a top professional.
