'Battered and terrible' - Alan Shearer agrees with Roy Keane on Manchester United assessment

Alan Shearer believes Manchester United must solve their midfield conundrum before they can hope for better results.

United are seeking to improve their midfield in the transfer market and MEN Sport reported on Monday that Bayern Munich's Ryan Gravenberch is an option. Currently, Erik ten Hag is starting with Casemiro, Mason Mount and Bruno Fernandes in the centre but the combination has not worked in the opening two games.

At the weekend, Roy Keane described Fernandes and Mount as being like schoolboys out of possession. On his new podcast The Rest is Football, Shearer agreed with the former United captain about there being issues which need resolving.

He explained: "They were terrible at the weekend Man United. Until he (Ten Hag) sorts that conundrum out in midfield then they are going to continue to have problems because clearly those three in Casemiro, Mount and Fernandes hasn't worked in the two games. They have been battered in both games in that department, overrun, out fought and out thought. There is big, big work there for them to improve."

The transfer window is in full swing and United have got their hands on three players well in advance of the September 1 deadline, with Rasmus Hojlund joining Mason Mount and Andre Onana at Old Trafford.

A goalkeeper, a midfielder and a striker were Erik ten Hag's priorities heading into the summer window, but that doesn't mean their business ends here, with further incomings and outgoings still on the cards..
