Roy Keane has missed the point with criticism of Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes

Harry Maguire was stripped of the Manchester United captaincy this summer, with Erik ten Hag handing the armband to Bruno Fernandes on a permanent basis.

Fernandes was no stranger to the role having worn the armband during Maguire's many absences last season, guiding United to a third-place finish and a Carabao Cup triumph - but his first season as permanent captain hasn't started so promisingly. Ten Hag and his players have been under the spotlight for some time, with Fernandes’ role being questioned.

The Portuguese's passion and desire to win is clear, but his emotions can often get the better of him.

During the recent 3-0 defeat to Manchester City, Fernandes was seen complaining about decisions to the referee. It could be argued this sets a bad example for his colleagues and so could be a factor in the Reds' poor form.

Ex-United captain Roy Keane slammed Fernandes when analysing the defeat, saying: "The first thing I would do is take the captaincy off him. Fernandes is not captain material.”

But who else is there to turn to?

Incredibly, it could be argued that Maguire, given his current form and experience in the role, would actually be a solid candidate. But going back on a huge decision you made just a few months ago would be a controversial move from Ten Hag.

It should be remembered that Fernandes is an exceptional footballer. Despite criticism of his leadership skills, he has continued to demonstrate his importance to the team this term, scoring winners against Nottingham Forest, Burnley and Fulham.
