Rotherham United 1-1 Swansea City: Darling stunner cancels out Ogbene goal as points are shared

Harry Darling's sublime debut strike was only enough to earn Swansea City a 1-1 draw in their Championship opener at Rotherham United.

The Swans bossed long periods of the contest at The New York Stadium but fell behind to Chiedozie Ogbene's early header. But Darling struck his first goal for the Swans in sensational fashion before half-time to level proceedings.

Andy Fisher made a number of vital saves while Jamie Paterson, Joel Piroe and Michael Obafemi all had chances to win it for the visitors, but the spoils were ultimately shared on the first match of the 2022/23 campaign.

Darling, Nathan Wood and Matty Sorinola were all handed their competitive debuts having joined the Swans in the summer while Ben Cabango was listed among the substitutes following a significant period on the sidelines owing to an ankle injury.

The plan was clear well before a ball was even kicked in Yorkshire. Following a colossal turnaround in what was a major transitional season under Russell Martin last time out, this was Swansea's chance to show the fruits of their labour.

The confidence from those in the slick new grey strip was evident from the outset. Martin's men had complete ownership of possession, and their slickness when bold ensured the Millers barely got a sniff in the opening stages.

Piroe - who netted six times in pre-season - got into several dangerous positions courtesy of the work of the team collectively, and he had two shots blocked in the opening 15 minutes. After a tough start, Paul Warne's men slowly settled and regularly went direct in attempt to cause problems. New recruit Darling coped well aerially, but the visitors were undone in the 16th minute.
