Rory Wilson pictured at Aston Villa medical as Rangers goal machine prepares to say goodbye to Glasgow

Rory Wilson has checked into Ross Hall Hospital to undergo his Aston Villa medical.

The Rangers striker is set to join the Premier League outfit in a £350,000 deal that was thrashed out between the two clubs in order to avoid going to FIFA. Villa were adamant that Wilson was poised to join them on July 1, but Rangers insisted they would hold his registration until the end of the year after rejecting the Birmingham club’s initial offers.

The Villains then threatened to pay only the cross-border training fee, given Wilson was on amateur forms ahead of penning his first pro deal. The transfer wrangle was set to go to the world governing body before an acceptable sum was agreed upon. The total fee will depend on how many English Premier League appearances the teenager goes on to make, however. And now Wilson, who banged in 49 goals at youth level for club and country last season, is in Glasgow for all his pre-signing checks and tests.

Villa boss Steven Gerrard knows exactly what he’s getting in Wilson, having kept a close eye on him while in charge at Ibrox. Despite being linked with the likes of Calvin Bassey, Joe Aribo and Ryan Kent, this is the first time Gerrard has returned to raid his former club for a player.

Bassey remains on his radar, but could cost up to £25million with time left on his contract and a number of other interested parties. Kent and Aribo are in the final year of their deals however, and could be easier targets should Gerrard come back for some of Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s first team stars.
