Rory McIlroy puts Roy Keane on spot over infamous snub as Man United legend declares 'f****** hell, give me a break'

Rory McIlroy put Roy Keane on the spot over snubbing him for an autograph when he was a youngster - prompting a hilarious X-rated response from the Manchester United legend.

Golf star McIlroy was an avid United fan growing up and has frequently shared a tale in the past about Keane mercilessly refusing to sign his autograph when he was a kid. And he had the chance to go into the encounter in detail on Gary Neville's 'The Overlap' podcast, as he joined Keane, Neville and Ian Wright on the panel.

Host Neville wasted no time in getting it out of him and a grinning McIlroy was pleased to oblige. Recalling the incident, he said: "I was down at Portmarnock Links Hotel and the Irish team were staying. I saw one of my Man United legends in the lobby and asked him for an autograph. He looks over and goes 'not today, kid.' I was like 'Okay...'"

A red-faced Keane was evidently caught off guard as he abruptly asked: "Is that true?" to the hilarity of the studio. McIlroy informed him that it was and pressed ahead with the tale, but Keane still wasn't having it.

He replied: "I'm still going to fight my corner over this. It depends on the timing, if you're in the zone or where you are mentally. I feel bad, if that is 100 per cent true. I wouldn't just snub a little kid...." With a laugh, he added: "F***** hell, give me a break. I'm just thinking I must have been..." That's when Arsenal legend Wright cut in: "Normal Roy," to more hilarity from the star-studded panel.

An embarrassed Keane then asked: "Can we move on?" But the final word went to McIlroy who said: "It's fine, I've gotten over it. We've made up now, and we're best of friends."
