Roberto Mancini takes over as Saudi Arabia manager

Roberto Mancini has been appointed as the new manager of the Saudi Arabia national team.

The 58-year-old has signed a four-year deal to manage the side following his resignation as Italy head coach earlier this month.

He takes over from Herve Renard, who left Saudi in March to manage the France Women's national team.
Mancini who led the Azzurri to European Championship glory with victory against England at Wembley in 2021, is looking forward to taking charge of the Saudi team.

"I am immensely honoured to be offered the position as Saudi Arabia national team manager," the former Manchester City and Inter Milan boss said.

"I believe this is a great opportunity for me, to experience football in a new country, especially with the growing popularity of football in Asia.

"I firmly believe that the passionate footballing culture of Saudi Arabia and the intrinsic quality of Saudi players are crucial ingredients for success.

"The presence of top players in the Saudi Pro League indicates the potential for growth in the national football scene."

After a storied playing career, in which he won Serie A titles with Sampdoria and Lazio, Mancini entered management, winning league titles in Italy with Inter Milan and famously guiding Manchester City to their first title in modern times in dramatic fashion in 2011/12.

His first game in charge of Saudi Arabia will be a friendly against Costa Rica on 8 September at St James' Park.
